This rare Italian variety comes from southern Italy and is also called ‘Serpente di Sicilia’ (Serpent of Sicily). The long baseball-bat shaped fruits will grow straight and long if trained on a trellis or pergola. If grown on the ground, they will curl and form snake shapes. This unique plant is actually in the gourd family, but is grown and enjoyed like a summer squash. The fruit must be peeled, and the flavor is slightly citrusy!
Flesh is spongy and takes longer to cook than a zucchini. Wonderful sliced and fried or simmered in pasta sauces.

Its fruit can grow up to three feet long, but tastes best when picked young, around 12 inches. Make sure you have room for this vigorous grower! Vines can reach up to 25 feet, it thrives in full sun. Even the growing tips of the green vines are edible—sauté them in olive oil for a delicious treat.

This is Plenty Farms Founder, Sarah’s family squash - a special variety!

All Plenty Farms plant starts are grown in our custom soil blend. Made from our own compost to provide the plants nutrients, we do not use any chemical fertilizers. We believe this allows the plant to acclimate to home gardens. We recommend you amend your garden soil with compost when planting to give your plants the best start possible!
